Geothermal Sites

Rotorua is one of the world’s most spectacular Geothermal Wonderlands. Geothermal activity, from the Greek geo meaning earth and therme meaning heat, seethes from cracks in the streets, steam from backyard hot pools, bursts from geysers throughout the area, and bubbles from cauldron-like mud pools.

The phenomenal creativity of nature can be seen in all its glory right here in Rotorua. Multi-hued lichens, moss and salt structures blend harmoniously with lush native greens, crystal blue lakes and earth tones ranging from rust to ochre. Splendid examples of silicate and mineral formations rise from and mould into a landscape sculpted by the region’s turbulent volcanic activity for thousands of years, and the resulting terraces, valleys and lakes are beyond beauty, they are nature’s own art form.

Rotorua and its surrounding areas are charged with a primordial ambiance that challenges the auditory, visual and olfactory senses.

There are five main Geothermal Areas in which a variety of geysers, hot springs, boiling mud pools and hissing craters can be experienced up close.

Mountain Bike

Mountain Bike Rotorua is your gateway to Whakarewarewa Forest – the stunning jewel in the crown of the adventure destination that is Rotorua. Located in the forest itself, the friendly team here at the MBR base have everything you need to get out and ride!

Besides her natural beauty, the true strength of our forest is that she caters to all levels of Mountain Bike interest. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never been mountain biking before or you live, eat, breathe and dream about your next MTB fix, Whakarewarewa Forest has trails for you! With more than 100kms of mountain biking trail loop options for you to choose and explore, you can opt to hire our bikes for 2 hours, half-day, full-day, or go on multi-day adventures. We also have guided tour and adventure day (bike/raft/kayak/hot pool) options and bike mechanical support available onsite.

Rounding out the MTB Rotorua hub, we have the unique WAIPA CAFE that offers some of the best espresso, smoothies, and food you can get 364 days a year. Coupled with the new REDWOODS CAFE at the Redwoods Visitor Information Centre, we are now an unmissable feature of your forest exploration. Open 9 am-5 pm every day of the year excluding Xmas Day.
